Install

Works with every agent the skills CLI supports.

npx skills add https://github.com/shoootyou/get-shit-done-multi --skill gsd-map-codebase
  1. 01

    Install

Run the command in your project. The CLI asks which agents to install for.

  2. 02

    Describe the task

Ask your agent for something this skill covers. It loads gsd-map-codebase automatically when relevant.

  3. 03

    Review the result

The agent follows the SKILL.md steps, scripts and references bundled with the skill.

SKILL.md

The instructions your agent reads when the skill is triggered.

<objective> Analyze existing codebase using parallel gsd-codebase-mapper agents to produce structured codebase documents.

Each mapper agent explores a focus area and writes documents directly to .planning/codebase/. The orchestrator only receives confirmations, keeping context usage minimal.

Output: .planning/codebase/ folder with 7 structured documents about the codebase state. </objective>

<execution_context> @{{PLATFORM_ROOT}}/get-shit-done/workflows/map-codebase.md </execution_context>

<context> Focus area: $ARGUMENTS (optional - if provided, tells agents to focus on specific subsystem)

Load project state if exists: Check for .planning/STATE.md - loads context if project already initialized

This command can run:

  • Before {{COMMAND_PREFIX}}new-project (brownfield codebases) - creates codebase map first
  • After {{COMMAND_PREFIX}}new-project (greenfield codebases) - updates codebase map as code evolves
  • Anytime to refresh codebase understanding </context>

<when_to_use> Use map-codebase for:

  • Brownfield projects before initialization (understand existing code first)
  • Refreshing codebase map after significant changes
  • Onboarding to an unfamiliar codebase
  • Before major refactoring (understand current state)
  • When STATE.md references outdated codebase info

Skip map-codebase for:

  • Greenfield projects with no code yet (nothing to map)
  • Trivial codebases (<5 files) </when_to_use>
<process> 1. Check if .planning/codebase/ already exists (offer to refresh or skip) 2. Create .planning/codebase/ directory structure 3. Spawn 4 parallel gsd-codebase-mapper agents: - Agent 1: tech focus → writes STACK.md, INTEGRATIONS.md - Agent 2: arch focus → writes ARCHITECTURE.md, STRUCTURE.md - Agent 3: quality focus → writes CONVENTIONS.md, TESTING.md - Agent 4: concerns focus → writes CONCERNS.md 4. Wait for agents to complete, collect confirmations (NOT document contents) 5. Verify all 7 documents exist with line counts 6. Commit codebase map 7. Offer next steps (typically: {{COMMAND_PREFIX}}new-project or {{COMMAND_PREFIX}}plan-phase) </process>

<success_criteria>

  • .planning/codebase/ directory created
  • All 7 codebase documents written by mapper agents
  • Documents follow template structure
  • Parallel agents completed without errors
  • User knows next steps </success_criteria>

FAQ

What does the gsd-map-codebase skill do?

Analyze codebase with parallel mapper agents to produce .planning codebase documents

How do I install gsd-map-codebase?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/shoootyou/get-shit-done-multi --skill gsd-map-codebase in your project. The skills CLI detects the agents you use and copies the skill into the right folder. For Claude Code you can also place the skill folder at ~/.claude/skills/gsd-map-codebase/ (personal) or .claude/skills/gsd-map-codebase/ (project).

Which AI agents can use gsd-map-codebase?

Any agent that supports the open Agent Skills format (a folder with a SKILL.md file), including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Cline, OpenCode and more.

Is gsd-map-codebase safe to install?

No partner security audit is available yet. Skills can run commands and scripts, so read the SKILL.md and any bundled files before installing.

A relentless interview to sharpen a plan or design.

Scan a codebase for deepening opportunities, present them as a visual HTML report, then grill through whichever one you pick.

mattpocock/skills

Compact the current conversation into a handoff document for another agent to pick up.

domain-modeling

mattpocock/skills

Build and sharpen a project's domain model. Use when discussing codebase terminology, writing or editing a GLOSSARY.md, or recording or editing an ADR.

codebase-design

mattpocock/skills

Shared vocabulary for designing deep modules. Use when the user wants to design or improve a module's interface, find deepening opportunities, decide where a seam goes, make code more testable or AI-navigable, or when another skill needs the deep-module vocabulary.

mattpocock/skills

Diagnosis loop for hard bugs and performance regressions. Use when the user says "diagnose"/"debug this", or reports something broken/throwing/failing/slow.
