game-recon

Figure out how a specific installed game can be modded, before writing any mod code. Covers where it's installed, the engine and version, managed vs native code, anti-cheat, loaders already present, save and config folders, and the community's modding route. Also whether this machine can run it (a Windows game on macOS or Linux, x64 on ARM). Use when the user asks "can I mod ?", "what engine is ", "how do people mod ", or at the start of any modding task. Produces MODDINGPLAN.md.

Install

Works with every agent the skills CLI supports.

npx skills add https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder --skill game-recon
  1. 01

    Install

Run the command in your project. The CLI asks which agents to install for.

  2. 02

    Describe the task

Ask your agent for something this skill covers. It loads game-recon automatically when relevant.

  3. 03

    Review the result

The agent follows the SKILL.md steps, scripts and references bundled with the skill.

SKILL.md

The instructions your agent reads when the skill is triggered.

Game recon

Goal: in about five minutes, know what you're dealing with and which route to take. Write the answer down so every later step can rely on it.

0. Has another agent been here?

um kb search "<game>" (and the engine name). A field note in the shared knowledge base can hand you the working versions, the route, and the gotchas before you touch anything. See the share-field-notes skill.

1. Find it and fingerprint it

um scan --list # Steam, Epic and Xbox installs (Windows, WSL, Linux, macOS)
um scan "<name or folder>" # host, engine, version, exes (.NET?), anti-cheat, loaders,
                               # mod folders, saves, routes
um scan "<game>" --json # the same, machine-readable

um lives at bin/um in the universal-modder repo (plugins and clones put it on PATH). Anywhere else: uv tool install git+https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder.

um scan reads files only. It indexes the install (bounded), sniffs PE headers, the Unity/Godot/GameMaker headers and the Unreal version string, maps known games to their community loader, and points to the playbook to read: skills/mod-any-game/references/engines/<engine>.md.

The scan can't see everything, so check these by hand:

  • Game not in a store library (GOG, itch, a standalone folder): pass the folder path.
  • Several engines' signals: launchers and web helpers are common. The top score wins, but read the "also" line.
  • Anti-cheat installed elsewhere: kernel drivers (Vanguard's vgk.sys) and launcher-level protection don't live in the game folder. Search "<game> anti-cheat".
  • Online-only or live-service games: treat them as protected even if nothing was detected.

1b. Can this machine run it?

Skip this when the game is native to the host: a Windows game on Windows or from WSL, a macOS or Linux build on its own OS (um scan prints the host: and each exe's CPU, and warns when a Windows build meets another OS). Otherwise (a Windows-only game on macOS or Linux, an x64 game on an ARM CPU), or when a game that should run here won't start, search the notes by situation and exact error text first (um kb search "windows game on mac", um kb search "proton", um kb search "<error text>"), then follow references/compatibility.md: host checks, per-game reports, the layers, anti-cheat, probes.

2. Research the living community (always; versions move)

Search, in order:

  1. "<game> modding" / "<game> mod loader" / "<game> modding wiki". The game's wiki often has a modding page.
  2. Nexus Mods (most popular mods show which frameworks they depend on), Thunderstore (Unity games: BepInEx packs), mod.io, the Steam Workshop (does the game have one? um scan shows installed Workshop content).
  3. GitHub: "<game> mod", "<game> modding api", "<game> decompile", "<game> sdk", "<engine> mod loader".
  4. Recent posts (X/Reddit/Discord announcements) for new frameworks. The loader might be days old.

Capture: the loader's name, repo, current version and install steps, the game versions it supports, a "hello world" example mod, and where logs go.

3. Decide

  • Can it be modded safely? Look at anti-cheat, online-only parts, the EULA or mod policy, and the ownership checks that loaders rely on (see skills/mod-any-game/references/safety.md). If not: say so, and offer what is possible (official tools, offline modes, a different game with the same idea).
  • Route: loader API > data/asset mod > managed patching > native hooks > reimplementation/mashup. Pick the first that reaches the user's idea.

4. Write MODDING_PLAN.md

# <Game> modding plan
- Install: <path> (<store> <appid>), version <x>
- Engine: <engine + version>, code: managed .NET / IL2CPP / native, 64-bit
- Anti-cheat / online: <none | what + verdict>
- Host / compat (if not native): <host OS, CPU, GPU> vs <game CPU + graphics API>; layer: <name + version>;
verified by: <probe, log or screenshot>
- Saves: <path> Config: <path> Logs: <path>
- Community route: <loader vX.Y (repo)>, install: <steps>, example mod: <link>
- Chosen route for "<idea>": <route> because <reason>
- Lab plan: backup <folders> (um backup), lab profile <how>, windowed <how>
- Unknowns to resolve first: <list>

Then continue with the mod-any-game loop (lab setup → source of truth → vertical slice).

FAQ

What does the game-recon skill do?

Figure out how a specific installed game can be modded, before writing any mod code. Covers where it's installed, the engine and version, managed vs native code, anti-cheat, loaders already present, save and config folders, and the community's modding route. Also whether this machine can run it (a Windows game on macOS or Linux, x64 on ARM). Use when the user asks "can I mod ?", "what engine is ", "how do people mod ", or at the start of any modding task. Produces MODDINGPLAN.md.

How do I install game-recon?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder --skill game-recon in your project. The skills CLI detects the agents you use and copies the skill into the right folder. For Claude Code you can also place the skill folder at ~/.claude/skills/game-recon/ (personal) or .claude/skills/game-recon/ (project).

Which AI agents can use game-recon?

Any agent that supports the open Agent Skills format (a folder with a SKILL.md file), including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Cline, OpenCode and more.

Is game-recon safe to install?

No partner security audit is available yet. Skills can run commands and scripts, so read the SKILL.md and any bundled files before installing.

Who maintains game-recon?

It is published by rehan-remade in rehan-remade/universal-modder. It has 1,567 recorded installs.

mod-any-game

rehan-remade/universal-modder

Mod a PC game the user owns, taking an idea to working in the real game and recorded. It covers new items, weapons, enemies, bosses, units, civilizations, mechanics, art, sound, VR and cross-game mashups. Use when the user wants to mod, extend, hack on, reverse engineer or mash up a game ("add a nuke to Terraria", "make a new civ for Age of Empires", "put Minecraft inside X", "can I mod this game?"). It covers recon (engine, loaders, anti-cheat), choosing the route, a safe lab, a first vertical slice, fal-generated assets, in-game verification and a showcase clip.

reverse-engineering

rehan-remade/universal-modder

Read how a game actually works so a mod can hook it. Decompile .NET/Mono (ILSpy), IL2CPP (Cpp2IL, Il2CppDumper), Java (Vineflower) and native code (Ghidra, IDA, via MCP servers); dump data and asset formats; reverse-engineer a binary file format and prove it with a round trip; read live memory (Cheat Engine, Frida, x64dbg); find render passes (RenderDoc). Use when a mod needs game internals, e.g. "how does the boss AI work", "find the damage function", "what format is this .sld/.pak/.dat", "where is the player position in memory".

game-automation

rehan-remade/universal-modder

Launch, see and drive a real game so an agent can test its own mods. Covers launching via Steam or the exe, windowed mode at a fixed size, screenshots of the game window (GPU-safe capture), clicking and typing into menus, holding keys, relative mouse, crash-reporter cleanup, killing by PID, reading logs, scripted test scenes, and an in-game JSON bridge that lets an agent observe and act. Windows-first (also from WSL), with notes for Linux and macOS. Use when a mod must be verified in game, when navigating menus automatically, or when building a repeatable test or demo scene.

mashup-mods

rehan-remade/universal-modder

Build cross-game mashups and total conversions, the "Minecraft inside Elden Ring" or "skateboarding in MW2" kind. Covers passthrough mods (two games running at once and exchanging state, rendering and collision), porting one game's content or mechanics into another, embedding a decompiled game as a library, and clean reimplementations that read the user's own game files. Use when the user wants to combine two games, bring an enemy, mechanic or world from one game into another, or rebuild a game's runtime, or reimplement the guest's rules headless inside a real host.

asset-pipeline

rehan-remade/universal-modder

Turn generated or hand-made art into exactly what a game engine loads. Covers sprite cutout, trim and nearest-neighbour fitting to frame sizes, pixelation to a palette, sprite sheets and strips, player/team-colour masks, seamless textures, and rendering a 3D model into sprite frames from the game's own camera (isometric/RTS 8 or 16 headings, side view, top-down) with Blender. Use after generating assets, or when the user asks to make sprites, sprite sheets, animation frames, isometric unit sprites or icons for a game.

share-field-notes

rehan-remade/universal-modder

Search and contribute to the shared AI-modding knowledge base, where field notes record how specific games were modded, decompiled or reverse-engineered (exact versions, route, engine facts, verification, gotchas). Use before starting work on a game ("has anyone modded X?"), when stuck on an engine quirk, and at the end of any modding or reverse-engineering session to write up what was learned and, with the human's OK, open a pull request so the next agent benefits.
