Install
Works with every agent the skills CLI supports.
npx skills add https://github.com/materializeinc/agent-skills --skill mz-sql-navigation- 01
Install
Run the command in your project. The CLI asks which agents to install for.

Describe the task
Ask your agent for something this skill covers. It loads mz-sql-navigation automatically when relevant.

Review the result
The agent follows the SKILL.md steps, scripts and references bundled with the skill.

Navigating Materialize SQL
The mz-deploy language server answers questions about an mz-deploy project's object
graph. Use the LSP tool for these instead of text search — grep finds strings that look
like an object name, the language server finds the object.
What to use it for
- Go to definition — resolve where a referenced view, table, source, or index is defined, including across schemas.
- Hover — inspect an object's columns and their types without opening its definition.
- Document symbols — list the objects a single
.sqlfile defines. - Workspace symbols — locate an object by name when you don't know its file.
Before changing an object, use these to find what depends on it. In Materialize a view's definition constrains everything downstream of it, so an edit that type-checks in isolation can still break dependents.
Diagnostics
Parse errors surface automatically after each edit. Treat them as authoritative for
syntax; they come from the same parser mz-deploy uses to build the project.
Requirements
mz-deploy must be on PATH (which mz-deploy). If every navigation request comes back
empty while the server looks healthy, the plugin's mz-deploy project directory
setting is pointing somewhere other than the directory holding project.toml. The
server takes that directory as its project root, and a project nested in a subdirectory
needs the setting to name that subdirectory. Report this rather than falling back to
grep — a stale setting is worth fixing once.
FAQ
What does the mz-sql-navigation skill do?
Use when reading or editing .sql files in an mz-deploy project (a directory with project.toml) — resolve object references, columns, and types with the LSP tool instead of grepping. Covers go-to-definition, hover, and document/workspace symbols for Materialize SQL.
How do I install mz-sql-navigation?
Run npx skills add https://github.com/materializeinc/agent-skills --skill mz-sql-navigation in your project. The skills CLI detects the agents you use and copies the skill into the right folder. For Claude Code you can also place the skill folder at ~/.claude/skills/mz-sql-navigation/ (personal) or .claude/skills/mz-sql-navigation/ (project).
Which AI agents can use mz-sql-navigation?
Any agent that supports the open Agent Skills format (a folder with a SKILL.md file), including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Cline, OpenCode and more.
Is mz-sql-navigation safe to install?
No partner security audit is available yet. Skills can run commands and scripts, so read the SKILL.md and any bundled files before installing.
Who maintains mz-sql-navigation?
It is published by materializeinc in materializeinc/agent-skills. It has 116 recorded installs.

materialize-terraform-self-managed
materializeinc/agent-skills
Terraform modules for deploying self-managed Materialize on AWS (EKS), Azure (AKS), and GCP (GKE). Covers networking, Kubernetes clusters, managed PostgreSQL, object storage, the Materialize operator, and Materialize instance configuration. Use this skill whenever the user asks about deploying self-managed Materialize with Terraform, setting up Materialize infrastructure on any cloud, configuring EKS/AKS/GKE for Materialize, troubleshooting a self-managed deployment, upgrading Materialize instances, customizing Terraform variables for Materialize, or working with the materialize-terraform-self-managed repository. Also trigger when the user mentions Karpenter node pools for Materialize, persist or metadata backend URLs, the Materialize operator Helm chart, CRD versions (v1alpha1 vs v1), rollout strategies, or NVMe swap configuration for Materialize nodes.
materialize-terraform-provider
materializeinc/agent-skills
Using the Materialize Terraform provider to manage Materialize resources declaratively. Covers clusters, sources (Kafka, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server), sinks (Kafka, Iceberg), connections, materialized views, indexes, tables, roles, grants, secrets, network policies, and cloud-only resources (users, SSO, SCIM, app passwords). Use this skill whenever the user asks about writing Terraform for Materialize, creating or configuring Materialize resources with Terraform, importing existing Materialize objects into Terraform state, configuring the Materialize provider for Cloud or self-managed, setting up RBAC or grants via Terraform, creating connections or sources in Terraform, or troubleshooting Terraform plan/apply issues with Materialize resources. Also trigger when the user mentions materializecluster, materializesourcekafka, materializeconnectionpostgres, or any other materialize resource type.

Popular data & databases skills
supabase-postgres-best-practices
supabase/agent-skills
Postgres best practices maintained by Supabase, for Postgres running anywhere. Load this skill BEFORE writing or changing anything that lives in a Postgres database: creating or altering tables and columns (including choosing column types), schema design, migrations and declarative schema files, RLS policies and the tests that verify them, indexes, triggers, database functions, queues and scheduled jobs (pgcron, pgmq), vector/semantic search (pgvector), and restoring dumps (pgrestore) or importing data. Also load it when diagnosing slow queries, high CPU, timeouts, EXPLAIN plans, connection exhaustion, locking, bloat, or rows visible to the wrong user or tenant. This is not just a performance guide — schema, migration, security, and SQL authoring tasks need these rules too, even for a one-column change or a single query.
