Install

Works with every agent the skills CLI supports.

npx skills add https://github.com/laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill handoff
  1. 01

    Install

Run the command in your project. The CLI asks which agents to install for.

  2. 02

    Describe the task

Ask your agent for something this skill covers. It loads handoff automatically when relevant.

  3. 03

    Review the result

The agent follows the SKILL.md steps, scripts and references bundled with the skill.

SKILL.md

The instructions your agent reads when the skill is triggered.

Write or update a handoff document so the next agent with fresh context can continue.

Steps

  1. If HANDOFF.md exists in the project root, read it first.
  2. Do not duplicate content already in PRDs, plans, ADRs, issues, commits, or diffs — reference them by path or URL.
  3. Write or update HANDOFF.md in the project root with:
    • Goal — what we're trying to accomplish
    • Current Progress — what's done (link commits/PRs)
    • In flight — running or cut work, if any: run id and resume command, branch or worktree, uncommitted paths and their owner, submitted remote jobs
    • What Worked — approaches that succeeded
    • What Didn't Work — dead ends, so they aren't retried
    • Next Steps — concrete action items
    • Suggested skills — which skills the next session should load, if any
  4. If the user passed arguments, tailor the doc to that focus.
  5. Tell the user the path so they can start a fresh conversation with it.

FAQ

What does the handoff skill do?

Write or update a HANDOFF.md so a fresh agent can continue this work. Use when the user says "handoff", "compact this", "context is full", or "/clear and continue".

How do I install handoff?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/laguagu/claude-code-nextjs-skills --skill handoff in your project. The skills CLI detects the agents you use and copies the skill into the right folder. For Claude Code you can also place the skill folder at ~/.claude/skills/handoff/ (personal) or .claude/skills/handoff/ (project).

Which AI agents can use handoff?

Any agent that supports the open Agent Skills format (a folder with a SKILL.md file), including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Cline, OpenCode and more.

Is handoff safe to install?

No partner security audit is available yet. Skills can run commands and scripts, so read the SKILL.md and any bundled files before installing.
