threejs-controls
Addon camera and object manipulation controls: OrbitControls, MapControls, FlyControls, FirstPersonControls, TrackballControls, ArcballControls, DragControls, PointerLockControls, TransformControls; damping, target focal point, and integration with the animation loop. Use for editor-style navigation and gizmos—not a full game character controller stack; pair with Raycaster selection patterns in threejs-objects when transforming selections.

Install
Works with every agent the skills CLI supports.
npx skills add https://github.com/full-stack-skills/threejs-skills --skill threejs-controls- 01
Install
Run the command in your project. The CLI asks which agents to install for.
- 02
Describe the task
Ask your agent for something this skill covers. It loads threejs-controls automatically when relevant.
- 03
Review the result
The agent follows the SKILL.md steps, scripts and references bundled with the skill.
SKILL.md
The instructions your agent reads when the skill is triggered.
When to use this skill
ALWAYS use this skill when the user mentions:
- Orbiting/panning/dolly around a target, inertia/damping, min/max distance/polar angles
- Map-like pan (MapControls) or flying (FlyControls)
- Transform gizmo translate/rotate/scale with
TransformControls - Dragging objects in plane (DragControls), pointer lock FPS (PointerLockControls)
IMPORTANT: controls vs webxr
| Context | Skill |
|---|---|
| Desktop/browser camera nav | threejs-controls |
| XR controller poses | threejs-webxr |
Trigger phrases include:
- "OrbitControls", "TransformControls", "MapControls", "PointerLockControls"
- "轨道", "变换控制器", "漫游"
How to use this skill
- Import from addons path (threejs-dev-setup).
- Construct with
(camera, domElement); forTransformControlsalso attach to renderer events. - Animation loop: when
enableDamping, callcontrols.update()each frame. - TransformControls: wire
dragging-changedto disable Orbit temporarily; sync with selection from threejs-objects. - Constraints: set min/max distance/angles to avoid flipping or underground views.
- Dispose:
controls.dispose()when tearing down.
See examples/workflow-orbit-damping.md.

Scope
- In scope: Official addons controls usage patterns.
- Out of scope: Full physics character motor; mobile gesture frameworks.
Common pitfalls and best practices
- Forgetting
update()with damping enabled causes drift never settling. - TransformControls fighting with Orbit—pause one while using the other.
- Pointer lock requires user gesture and exit handling.
Documentation and version
Controls are under Controls (Addons) in three.js docs. API details (enableDamping, events) evolve—link OrbitControls / TransformControls pages for the user’s three.js version.
Agent response checklist
When answering under this skill, prefer responses that:
- Link the specific controls class from the docs.
- State
controls.update()when damping is on, every frame. - Coordinate
TransformControlswith selection / threejs-objects raycasting. - Separate desktop navigation from threejs-webxr locomotion.
- Call
dispose()on controls when unmounting canvas.

FAQ
What does the threejs-controls skill do?
Addon camera and object manipulation controls: OrbitControls, MapControls, FlyControls, FirstPersonControls, TrackballControls, ArcballControls, DragControls, PointerLockControls, TransformControls; damping, target focal point, and integration with the animation loop. Use for editor-style navigation and gizmos—not a full game character controller stack; pair with Raycaster selection patterns in threejs-objects when transforming selections.
How do I install threejs-controls?
Run npx skills add https://github.com/full-stack-skills/threejs-skills --skill threejs-controls in your project. The skills CLI detects the agents you use and copies the skill into the right folder. For Claude Code you can also place the skill folder at ~/.claude/skills/threejs-controls/ (personal) or .claude/skills/threejs-controls/ (project).
Which AI agents can use threejs-controls?
Any agent that supports the open Agent Skills format (a folder with a SKILL.md file), including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, Windsurf, Cline, OpenCode and more.
Is threejs-controls safe to install?
No partner security audit is available yet. Skills can run commands and scripts, so read the SKILL.md and any bundled files before installing.
Who maintains threejs-controls?
It is published by full-stack-skills in full-stack-skills/threejs-skills. It has 398 recorded installs.
